FAQ

Common questions

What actually moves the XAU/USD price?

Gold responds mainly to real interest rates, the US dollar, and demand for a defensive store of value. It pays no yield, so higher rates raise the cost of holding it. Headline risk and central bank buying also shift flows. None of these give a reliable direction, which is why sizing matters more than prediction.

Why is gold quoted in USD if I trade from Australia?

XAU/USD is the standard global quote, so the price you see is US dollars per ounce. Your account result in A$ therefore depends on both the gold move and the AUD/USD rate at the time. A flat gold price can still produce a gain or loss in A$ if the currency pair has moved.

What does one pip mean in gold?

One pip in XAU/USD is 0.01 of a US dollar per ounce. With one standard lot equal to 100 oz, a one-pip move is $1.00 per lot. That is why gold positions feel large quickly: a $10 move is 1,000 pips and $1,000 per standard lot before costs.

Is gold more volatile than major currency pairs?

Gold typically travels more in dollar terms than the majors, and position size has to reflect that. A stop that suits EUR/USD will often be too close for XAU/USD. Measure the stop in pips, then let the position size calculator convert it into a lot size that keeps your A$ risk fixed.

Where can I see the current gold price on this site?

The live price page carries the XAU/USD reference quote, with the trading hours page covering when it is most liquid in Australian time. Treat both as context: your broker's own bid and ask is the price you can actually deal on, and it will differ from a reference feed.
